Yesterday, our team attended a CPD delivered by Chris and Stephen from Yeoman Shield, the trading name of Harrison Thompson & Co Ltd. The session explored how wall and door protection systems can strengthen the resilience of public and commercial buildings.
Importantly, the CPD highlighted how thoughtful design choices can improve safety, reduce long-term maintenance, and extend the lifespan of building interiors. We gained practical insight into balancing durability, compliance, and aesthetics.
Understanding Building Resilience
The CPD began by defining resilience in architecture. Resilience goes beyond structural strength. Instead, it considers physical performance, human safety, visual impact, and sustainability.
In high-traffic environments, buildings face constant wear and tear. Therefore, protective systems play a key role in maintaining performance over time. Yeoman Shield demonstrated how wall and door protection helps buildings withstand daily use while remaining compliant and visually appealing.
Wall and Door Protection in High-Traffic Areas
Next, the session focused on wall and door protection strategies for busy public spaces. These included healthcare settings, education buildings, retail environments, and leisure facilities.
Yeoman Shield explained how impact damage often leads to frequent repairs and redecorations. However, installing protection systems at vulnerable points can significantly reduce this cycle. Building owners can therefore cut costs without sacrificing a professional appearance.
The CPD also showed how protection products can be installed during new builds or retrofitted to existing buildings. This flexibility makes them suitable for a wide range of projects.
Fire Safety, Accessibility, and Compliance
A key part of the session examined legal and regulatory compliance. Yeoman Shield highlighted how protection systems must support, not compromise, building safety requirements.
For example, fire-rated door protection products help maintain the integrity of fire doors. These products protect doors from impact while ensuring they continue to perform as designed. As a result, fire safety and accessibility standards remain intact.
Sustainability, Hygiene, and Whole-Life Value
Sustainability formed a strong theme throughout the session. Rather than focusing on short-term fixes, the CPD emphasised whole-life building performance.
By reducing the need for repairs and redecorations, protection systems help lower a building’s carbon footprint. In addition, hygienic, easy-clean surfaces support infection control in sensitive environments. Many Yeoman Shield products are also recyclable and can contribute towards BREEAM scoring.
Consequently, resilient design choices can support both environmental goals and long-term value.
Real-World Case Studies and Practical Application
Throughout the presentation, Yeoman Shield shared real-world case studies. These examples showed how wall and door protection performs in demanding environments.
The session also covered specification advice. We learnt how to select the right products based on location, usage, and design intent. Importantly, Yeoman Shield offers free samples and survey services to support informed decisions.
Overall, the CPD provided a clear and practical overview of how wall and door protection supports resilient building design. It reinforced the importance of compliance, durability, safety, and aesthetics working together.
We would like to thank Chris and Stephen from Yeoman Shield for delivering an engaging and informative session. The insights shared will be valuable across a wide range of public and commercial projects.
