Today we had an insightful CPD session presented by Dan and Richard from Siderise on firestops and perimeter barrier systems for curtain wall façades. The session explored the critical role passive fire protection plays in modern building façades. Moreover, it provided an in-depth exploration of this essential area of building safety.

The session offered a comprehensive analysis of passive fire protection, focusing specifically on its application within modern curtain wall systems. Dan and Richard guided the team through the fundamental principles of façade design, introducing key concepts before exploring the complex regulatory landscape that governs fire safety in construction.

A significant portion of the training was dedicated to navigating building regulations, including mandatory guidance and specialist documentation. The presenters highlighted the salient differences between current compliance paths, ensuring our team is equipped to meet and even exceed all regulatory requirements. This included a detailed look at the functional performance requirements of fire stops, which are essential for preventing the vertical and horizontal spread of fire between building compartments.

Crucially, the seminar emphasised the importance of testing and certification. We explored the rigorous standards and processes that products must undergo to achieve compliance. This focus on certified solutions is paramount to guaranteeing the real-world performance and integrity of the systems we specify and install.

Key learning points included:
  • Understanding the principles of curtain wall systems.
  • Navigating the regulatory landscape for façade fire safety.
  • Meeting performance criteria for effective fire compartmentation.
  • Valuing component testing and certification for compliance.
  • Mastering installation best practices for long-term safety.

The session concluded with a practical overview of important detailing and installation considerations. The performance of any firestop system is only as good as its installation. This segment provided invaluable insights into best practices, ensuring that theoretical knowledge is translated into flawless execution on-site.

This CPD has further enhanced our team‘s specialist knowledge, reinforcing the principles that underpin our commitment to safety and quality. We extend our sincere thanks to Dan and Richard for delivering such an informative and engaging presentation.
